The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) engineering
program is participating in a 4-year competition called EcoCAR 3.
This competition is the latest U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE)
Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition (AVTC) series. EcoCAR 3
is challenging 16 chosen Universities across North America to redesign a
2016 Chevrolet Camaro to be a hybrid-electric vehicle. The U.S. DOE challenges
each chosen campus to transform this Chevrolet Camaro, while still maintaining the performance expected
from this iconic American car. Student teams develop and integrate energy innovations that maximize
performance, while retaining the safety and high consumer standards of the standard Camaro. EcoCAR 3
is sponsored by DOE and General Motors (GM) and managed by Argonne National Laboratory; with their
ongoing support they have achieved the ultimate training ground for minting future automotive leaders.
Over the years the Georgia Tech team alone has grown to over 50 members, ranging from a wide variety of
engineering and communication sub-teams. In their fourth year of competition, the Georgia Tech EcoCAR
3 team has made substantial improvements. The team has challenged themselves to learn from previous
mistakes, improve performance, integrate innovative design systems, and increase efficiency. Last year
Georgia Tech landed an overall 3rd place, while receiving three first place trophies for ADAS evaluation
event, controls and SMS presentation, and mechanical presentation. Georgia Tech is enthused about their
progression throughout the competition and is confident that
improvements made to the vehicle in year four will improve
their scores considerably. Through these innovative design
changes, the team is eager to continue developing and testing
the vehicle in preparation for this year’s competition.
TEAM VISION STATEMENT:
To cultivate the spirit of innovation and sustainable development
among Georgia Tech students and the general public, where EcoCAR
3 is one out of many stepping-stones for a future paradigm shift in the
automotive industry.
